Neptune in Sagittarius gives an idealistic attitude and orientation towards the highest values, which leads to the flourishing of spiritually oriented doctrines and schools. An important source of inspiration in these searches are the traditions of other cultures and peoples. This is a time of elation and optimism. People tend to optimistic perception of reality. The sexual side of life acquires great importance.
After the period of existential crisis of Neptune in Scorpio, in Sagittarius active search for new values and ideals begins. In the 1970’s-1980’s, this process was such large-scale that the phenomenon was called the New Age. Its basis was the idea of the transformation of consciousness, the development of a divine individual principle, the search for truth. Western culture has discovered the Eastern spiritual and philosophical traditions: Buddhism, Zen Buddhism, Hinduism.
In the 1970’s-1980’s, almost every Western university, which was teaching religion, created departments or groups for the study of Zen. In 1970, the first Zen monastery was founded in the US. In the 1970’s, in the USSR books of D. Suzuki and A. Watts were informally published; first Buddhist groups appeared.
Sagittarius gives people a great interest in ideas and concepts of other peoples. The active and consistent perception of truth, as a practical way in which you reach consistently one goal after another, is very close by spirit to Sagittarius. Therefore, doctrines that offered spiritual development as a practical system, acquired immense popularity. The most prominent of them became Way of the Warrior of Carlos Castaneda and The Fourth Way of George Gurdjieff. The magical belief system of the Mexican Indians, described in the 1970’s by Castaneda, made a resonance and became extremely popular all over the world. The doctrine has given rise to many followers and schools. In the 1970’s-1980’s, Gurdjieff’s system was experiencing a new birth. Both schools are based on ancient traditions and have number of conceptual and methodological analogies. Others doctrines, that got popular in this time, such as yoga and Asian martial arts, also were based on the authoritative traditions and had a well-developed ethical-philosophical fundament.
