Uranus in Sagittarius extends ideological boundaries, philosophical understanding of life. People re-evaluate the existing social norms and actively search for new reference points and values.

In the 1980’s, Mikhail Gorbachev’s perestroika became striking and characteristic phenomenon of Uranus in Sagittarius. Perestroika was a cardinal revision of foreign policy on the basis of its philosophical rethinking. The new philosophy of the Soviet foreign policy was named “the new political thinking” and became an important ideological basis for Perestroika. Mikhail Gorbachev presented the concept in his book Perestroika: New Thinking for Our Country and the World in 1987. Gorbachev himself commented on the motives of Perestroika as follows: “This is a reaction to the philosophical and then at the political level to the challenges faced by individual countries and the whole world at this critical juncture”.

Precisely reflecting the mood of the transit, Gorbachev’s ideas caused a deep response in the international community, which led to the popularity of Gorbachev and his Perestroika. In 1990, Gorbachev was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

It is worth mentioning another kind of Sagittarius’ impact on the process. Many stated that Gorbachev’s wife Raisa had a big impact on his views and played not the last role in the initiation of Perestroika. And, as we know, she was a philosopher by profession.
